DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
----------------------
At 1100 PM HST (0900 UTC), the center of Hurricane Lowell was
located near latitude 13.5 North, longitude 152.2 West. Lowell is
moving toward the west near 12 mph (19 km/h), and this general 
motion is expected to continue for the next several days.
 
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 145 mph (230 km/h) 
with higher gusts.  Lowell is a category 4 hurricane on the 
Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.  Lowell could further 
strengthen on Wednesday and is expected to remain a powerful 
hurricane for the rest of the work week.
 
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles
(150 km).
 
The estimated minimum central pressure is 941 mb (27.79 inches).
 
 
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

SURF: Swells generated by Lowell are likely to affect portions of
the Hawaiian Islands beginning on Wednesday. These swells are
likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
